Friday night: Little John's with Clay and two of his friends from home that were visiting. I hadn't been to LJ's ALL SUMMER, which I can barely believe since I'm pretty sure I frequented it at least once a week during the year. I tried something new, the California Sun, which was a flatbread with veggies and feta on it. It was good, but wayyy too messy! Clay hosted a little shindig afterwards, and I spent most of that upstairs in the lovely air conditioning in Clay's room, chatting with Nicole and Katie and playing with the cat. :)
Saturday: We were up bright and early to hit the Farmer's Market at 8:30! I had four boys with me, so I didn't feel like I could really take the time to look at everything like I wanted to, but we got some of my favorite farmer's market items: multi-colored cherry tomatoes, a multi-colored pepper, 2 purple peppers, baby squash and zucchini, and some fresh string beans. We also completed a task on our list of food adventures to explore in Charlottesville this summer - the taco truck! You can get tacos for $2.50 at the Farmer's Market, and we'd been hearing that they're a must-try kind of thing. Anddd they were amazing! A fresh, soft tortilla filled with pulled pork, a little onion kind of slaw, tomatillo salsa, a little spicy salsa for a bit of a kick, and queso fresco. It was absolutely delicious. Not something that I would normally eat for breakfast, but we had to try them! I went to work after our outing, and then met back up with some friends to hit up the Hibachi Grill Buffet, one of our favorite new discoveries this year! It's a full Asian buffet, with so many options to choose from, but what makes it so amazing is that there is an entire buffet line where you can fill your plate with raw meat and veggies, and they will cook it for you on a hibachi grill, just like in one of those fancy restaurants where they cook your food in front of you! Only this meal is all-you-can-eat and only costs like $10!
I loaded my plate with: rice and a few noodles, an egg, mushrooms, onions, broccoli, zucchini, shrimp and crab. Grab an egg roll and maybe one or two tastes of something else from the buffet, and this will be the only meal you need to eat all day! We're all still amazed that we can go get food like this and have it be so inexpensive. Other favorites include the black pepper chicken and their sugary beignet-like donuts!
Saturday was concluded with hours and hours of playing Wii and several different board games. It was a nerdy but really fun night in!
Sunday: Boylan Bruuuunnccchh!!
This time I had to get the Hungover myself. It's definitely delicious, although by the end when my bowl was empty, I was wishing I hadn't eaten all of that beef. I always prefer veggies to meat, and definitely poultry or seafood to red meat when I do eat meat. So this was maybe a weird order for me, but for meat lovers, this is an amazing breakfast.
Brunch was followed by more board games, a trip to Bed Bath & Beyond and Harris Teeter, and a workout for me (elliptical, treadmill, weights and situps). I've been feeling super guilty today about the way I've been eating this weekend, and my failure to do any sort of exercise yesterday. I'm going to try to get back on track this week and make up for Midsummers.
Clay and I started that tonight by making a wonderful salad for dinner! First, we chopped up some fresh romaine.
Then hard-boiled some eggs...
Then defrosted some chicken to cook up and throw in...
And combined that chicken with a leftover stuffed chicken breast from dinner the other night...
And finally topped it off with parmesan cheese, crunchy croutons, and creamy Caesar dressing.
It was the perfect light meal to end our weekend of heavy eating!
